Our Favorite Hiking Trails Near Cupertino

Whoever came up with the term “great outdoors” did an outstanding job — being outside is not only good for your health, but it’s also just plain fun, so “great” seems like the perfect descriptor. As a community of active older adults, our location within walking distance of Rancho San Antonio County Park & Open Space Preserve is ideal for those who enjoy and appreciate being outside./

If you’re looking for hiking trails in the Bay area or near Cupertino, here are the ones we like best.

Take a Hike

Rancho San Antonio Park & Open Space Preserve

Since it’s right next door, we may be a little biased, but Rancho San Antonio offers more than 23 miles of trails, which include hiking trails for people of all skill levels and physical abilities as well as bicycling, and equestrian trails. There’s also Deer Hollow Farm with century-old, restored farm buildings and 80-100 farm animals and birds. That’s part of what makes it such a popular destination for The Forum’s residents and people from across the Bay Area. Here are some of our favorite places to take a hike.

Chamise Trail

This 2.1-mile trail ascends gradually to a tranquil, secluded meadow in the northern part of the preserve. It's the perfect spot for a picnic amid fields of grass in the shadow of Monte Bello Ridge and Black Mountain.

The Stephen E. Abbors (formerly PG&E trail), Coyote, Upper High Meadow and Wildcat Loop Trails

These trails are all within an 8.8-mile trail loop that features a river, shady laurel groves, rolling green hills and amazing scenic views. The trails offer a place for hiking, running, nature trips and bird watching.

Tony Look Trail to Steven Creek Reservoir:

This 2.5 hiking trail located in Steven Creek County Park, is a popular area for fishing, hiking and running.

Stevens Creek Trail

A 2.0-mile path in Mcclellan Ranch Park is often used for road biking, running and walking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring.

Seven Springs Trail Loop

This 2.6-mile trail in Freemont Older Open Space Preserve offers scenic views featuring gorgeous wildflowers. This trail is dog-friendly, so it’s a great option to bring along your furry companion. The trail offers a few options for beginning, moderate and experienced hikers.

The Monte Bello Preserve Loop

A 6.5-mile loop, this trail in Monte Bello Open Space Preserve near Palo Alto features beautiful scenery and wildflowers with a range of beginner to expert level hiking trails. This trail also offers horse paths for those who would like to experience it on horseback.

Castle Rock and Goat Rock Trail

This 4.6 mile loop trail at Indian Rock Ranch near Los Gatos features a waterfall and offers a lot of activities like rock climbing, mountain biking and camping.
